Tweens Read 2019
October 19, 2019

Middle grade readers in the Houston area are invited to attend the ninth annual Tweens Read Book Festival on October 19 at Pasadena Memorial High School. Tweens Read is a free festival put on in conjunction with Blue Willow Bookshop that offers middle grade readers, students in grades five through eight, a chance to discover new books and connect with established authors and illustrators. Author Jason Reynolds headlines the festival as the keynote speaker. Reynolds is the New York Times best-selling author of All American Boys, the Track series, Long Way Down, For Everyone, and Miles Morales-Spiderman. He has won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent, the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Youth/Teen, and the Schneider Family Book Award. His novel in verse Long Way Down (2017) was named a Newbery Honor book, a Printz Honor Book, and best young adult work by the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Awards. His newest middle grade book, Look Both Ways, is due out from Simon Kids this fall. Reynolds says he understands readers who say they hate reading. “I know there are a lot — A LOT — of young people who hate reading. I know that many of these book haters are boys. I know that many of these book-hating boys, don't actually hate books, they hate boredom.” Reynolds says he really feels them, “Because even though I'm a writer, I hate reading boring books too.” Over 25 additional local and national authors/illustrators will be in attendance, including New York Times bestselling author Julie Murphy, New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Matthew Holm, and the first National Ambassador of Young People's Literature, Jon Scieska. The festival will feature breakout sessions throughout the day, offering valuable insight into the creative processes of the diverse group of authors. The day will culminate in an autographing session, allowing tween readers the exciting opportunity to meet their favorite authors and ask questions one-on-one. Participants must purchase a book from Blue Willow Bookshop to access the autographing lines. Pre-registration is required for the keynote speaker and will be available on the Tweens Read website in early September.
